Swapping the desk for the saddle - for 900 miles!
A Shropshire insurance broker will be swapping his office chair for the saddle of a bike as he rides more than 900 miles in nine days to raise money for charity.
Dan Butler, who works at Beaumont Lawrence insurance brokers on Sweetlake Business Park in Shrewsbury, will be part of a team travelling from the most southern part of the UK - Lands End - to the most northern part of the UK - John O’Groats.
The 34-year-old, who is a member of Shropshire’s Paramount Cycling Team, will set out on May 16 and will be raising money for the Severn Hospice and Help for Heroes.
He said: “The ride will cover more than 1,400km with over 9,000 metres climbing over the nine days.
“We are all keen cyclists and it will be a real team effort to get everyone all the way in the nine-day goal.
“We chose the Severn Hospice and Help for Heroes because we wanted to raise funds for a local charity and a national charity that all of the team members wanted to support. We are really looking forward to raising as much as we can for both of them.”
Training has begun for the trip with the riders taking part in 40, 50 and 60 mile rides over the weekends with the Paramount Cycling Team.
“As the evenings get lighter we will be stepping up and riding further to ensure that we are ready for the 100-miles or more per day that the charity ride requires,” added Dan.
And his employers, Beaumont Lawrence, have already donated towards his grand total and wished him lots of luck for the trip.
Director Ben Lawrence said: “I am a keen cyclist myself and it is great to see Dan taking on what is a big challenge for any cyclist - I am sure he will feel a huge sense of pride when he joins us back in the office after the trip, and so he should.
“We are behind him all the way and have no doubt he will complete the challenge and raise lots of money for the Severn Hospice and Help for Heroes.
“We wish him and the rest of the team the very best of luck.”
Dan will be taking on the challenge with fellow cyclists Colin Heywood, Liz Heywood, Phil Goddard, Jonathan partridge, Phil Freeman, Damien Thompson, Rob Bould, Eddie Emblen, Randle Edwards and Russell Jones.
